Who we are

Rossana Barragán is a PhD in history at the Escuela de Altos Estudios en Ciencias Sociales de Paris where she taught the History Degree Course. She has also been a lecturer for the History Degree Course at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz, and director of the Archivio de La Paz (2005-2010).

She has been a Senior Researcher at the Instituto Internacional de Historia Social de Amsterdam (2001-2022) and is currently a Fellow of the Instituto and Investigadora del Postgrado Multidisciplinario CIDES-UMSA in La Paz.

Among her first publications there is Espacio Urbano y Dinámica Étnica en La Paz, selected among the 200 books rivisited for the Bicentenary of Independence, and also selected in 2003 by the Biblioteca del Bicentenario de la Vicepresidencia del Estado Plurinacional, and Indios, mujeres y ciudadanos en el siglo XIX (Fundación Diálogo, La Paz.) In 2009, she was coeditor of the Volumen Miradas a la Junta de La Paz; Juntas, Guerrillas, Héroes y Conmemoraciones and alongside María Luisa Soux she published Reescrituras de la Independencia, 2012 (Fundación Diálogo, La Paz). She edited Trabajos y trabadores en América Latina Siglos XVI-XXI, 2019. (Vicepresidencia del Estado, CIS, La Paz).

She is a member of the Editorial Committee of the online magazine Revista Latinoamericana de Trabajos (REVLATT).

Recently she published ​​​​​​​Potosí in the Global Silver Age (16th—19th Centuries) with Paula Zagalsky, (Brill, Leiden 2023). She’s currently adding the finishing touches to​​​​​​​ El Imperio del trabajo: produciendo plata para el mundo (siglos xvi-xviii) while her next release is​​​​​​​ The Struggle for Natural Resources: Findings from Bolivian History, edited with Carmen Soliz, New-México 2023.

He is a professor in the Departamento de Historia de la Universidad del Estado de Campinas (UNICAMP), Brasil. Director of the Dicionário do movimiento operário Rio de Janeiro do seculo XIX aos anos 1920 - militantes e organizações (São Paulo, 2009); co-editor of Culturas de Classe. Identidade e diversidade na formação do operariado (Campinas, 2004) and of Organizar e proteger. Trabalhadores, associatições e mutualismo no Brasil (séculos XIX e XX) (Campinas, 2014), author of the O movement operário na Primeira República (Rio de Janeiro, 2000).

Simone Cinotto is an Associate Professor of Contemporary History at the Università di Scienze Gastronomiche di Pollenzo, where he manages the international Master of Gastronomy: World Food Cultures and Mobility, while also coordinating the local research unit for the Progetto di Ricerca di Interesse Nazionale (PRIN) Transatlantic Transfers: The Italian Presence in Postwar America, focussed on the origins of Made-in-Italy in the United States. Cinotto coordinates the Fullbright programs for cultural exchanges between Italy and the US at the Università di Pollenzo, and he is an Affiliated Visiting Scholar at the Indiana University Bloomington (USA).

Cinotto is an author of many publications, among which Gastrofascismo e Impero: Il cibo nell’Africa Orientale Italiana, 1935-1941 (Mimesis, 2022), The Italian American Table: Food, Family, and Community in New York City (University of Illinois Press, 2013); Soft Soil Black Grapes: The Birth of ItalianWinemaking in California (New York University Press, 2012).

He edited, among other volumes, Food Mobilities: Making World Cuisines (University of Toronto Press, 2023); An Ocean of Style: Production and Consumption of Made in Italy in the Postwar United States (Mimesis, 2023) Global Jewish Foodways: A History (University of Nebraska Press, 2018) ; and Making Italian America: Consumer Culture and the Production of Ethnic Identities(Fordham University Press, 2014), which won the John G. Cawelti Award for Best Book of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association.

His article “Leonard Covello, the Covello Papers, and the Eating Habits of Italian Immigrants in New York” won the David Thelen Prize of the Organization of American Historians for best article on American History published in a language other than english (2004) and was published on the Journal of American History.

Cinotto taught as a visiting professor at the Indiana University (2017-2018), UniversitätHeidelberg (2023); University of Warsaw (2022); University of London SOAS (2014-2021), and at the Department of Italian Studies of the New York University (2008-2009).

Cinotto is art of the Editorial Board of Gastronomica, Food, Culture, and Society, Global Food History and Italian American Review.

Full Professor of History of the United States of America at the University of Roma Tre. Since July 2024, he has been the Director of the Rivista Italiana di Storia Internazionale, and he was the Director of the Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche (2019-2022) and the coordinator of the English-language Master's degree program in “International Studies” (2016-2019) at the University of Roma Tre. Since 2017, he has been the Director of CISPEA (Centro Interuniversitario di Storia e Politica Euro-Americana). Between 1995 and 2006, he was the Director of the Centro Studi Americani in Rome, where he currently sits on the Board of Directors, and of the American university consortium IES Rome. He obtained a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Roma “La Sapienza” and a Ph.D. in American history from the University of Kansas, USA. He has been a Fulbright scholar twice in the United States, where he began teaching American history. Currently, he focuses on the relations between Italy and the United States in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Much of his research has been dedicated to the history of Native Americans and U.S. politics in the American West.

Luigi Guarnieri Calò Carducci has a PhD in History of Political Thought (La Sapienza, Rome) and is a lecturer of Latin American History for the department of Humanistic Studies at the Università di Roma 3. He has taught at the University of Trieste, Teramo, and in LUISS “Guido Carli” University, Rome. He has taught at the Università di Trieste, Università di Teramo, and at the Università LUISS “Guido Carli”, in Rome. He has published many papers on colonial and contemporary Latin America, especially focussing on Peru and on the Andean area, among which Il Perù nella storia e nella storiografia, Rome, Bulzoni, 2013, La questione indigena in Perù, Rome, Bulzoni, 2010; Idolatria e identità creola in Perù. Le cronache andine tra Cinquecento e Seicento, Rome, Viella, 2007. He edited Europa e America allo specchio. Studi per Francesca Cantù, (with P. Broggio and M. Merluzzi) Rome, Viella, 2017; Tre anni a Buenos Aires. 1975-1978, de Bernardino Osio, Rome, Viella, 2017. Between 2017 and 2020 was president of the Asociación de Historiadores Latinoamericanistas Europeos (Ahila).

Raffaele Nocera, PhD in History (University of Pisa), is professor of Latin American History and coordinator of the Doctorate of International Studies for the department of Human and Social Sciences at the Università “L’Orientale” in Naples. The main themes of his research are the political history of Chile, Italian foreign politics in Latin America, and the euro-latinamerican political network in the second half of the 20th Century. Among his publications are Chile y la guerre, 1933-1943 (Lom-Dibam, 2006); Entre Mediterráneo y Atlántico. He is a historian and researcher for the Department of History of the Università Iberoamericana in Mexico City. He studied at the Humboldt University of Berlin and completed his post graduate studies at the faculty of Political and Social Sciences at UNAM (Mexico City). He completed a specialization in Latin American History at the University of Chicago. He presented numerous lectures and seminars at the Colegio de México, El Colegio de Historia en la FFy L (UNAM), at the University of Illinois, University of Chicago, University of California (Santa Cruz), University of de la República (Montevideo), and many more. Among his publications are El ocaso de los mitos, La rueda del azar, La transición interrumpida, Aproximaciones a la archeología de las emociones. Furthermore, he is director of the magazine​​​​​​​ Fractal and regularly writes for the periodical La Jornada.

He is a History professor at the University of California, Davis. Among his publications are La odyse de Juan Bautista Túpac Amaru: Testigo de la era de las revoluciones, 2022; La rebelión de Túpac Amaru, 2015 (winner of many awards and in its 5th edition in Peru); Colonialism in ruins: the earthquake-tsunami of 1746, 2012; De Túpac Amaru a Gamarra: Cuzco y la formación del Perú republicano, 2021; and with Carlos Aguirre Alberto Flores Galindo: Utopía, historia y revolución, 2020.

Matteo Pretelli is Associate Professor of the History of North America at the University of Naples “L'Orientale”, Italy. He has taught and conducted research at Italian, U.S., British, and Australian universities. He was a Fulbright Research Scholar at the University of Minnesota in 2008 and Visiting Professor at New York University in 2016 (as recipient of the Tiro a Segno Fellowship). He works mainly on Italian emigration to the United States and on relations between Italy and the United States. He is the author of several monographs including, with Francesco Fusi (University of Venice), Soldati e patrie: I combattenti alleati di origine italiana nella Seconda guerra mondiale (Bologna: Il Mulino, 2022), shortlisted as finalist for the Italian book award Premio Fiuggi-Storia. On this topic, together with Francesco Fusi, he has organized the photographic exhibition Voci di Libertà (financed by the U.S. Mission in Italy) circulating in Italy in Florence, Rome, Naples, Scarperia, Capaccio Paestum, Lucca. In 2023, he also cured a photographic book on John F. Kennedy’s visit to Naples in 1963. His latest book, authored with Stefano Luconi, is “Nazione di immigrati” o “fortezza America”? Gli Stati Uniti e le minoranze etniche nel XXI secolo (Milan: Mondadori, 2024).
