The forum “Liguria Meets Latin America: New Perspectives for Economic and Cultural Cooperation” took place in Genoa on October 21, 2025.
The U.S. tariff policy has prompted the European Union to intensify the search for new channels of economic exchange. In this context, the political agreement between the European Commission and Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay), currently in the ratification phase by member states, is of strategic importance.
The European Union has already signed numerous trade agreements with Latin American countries, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in its Export Action Plan, identifies Mexico, Brazil, and, more generally, the entire Mercosur area as among the most promising markets.
In this context, the conference "Liguria Meets Latin America" aims to deepen relations between Latin America, the European Union, Italy, and Liguria from institutional, economic, and cultural perspectives.
The first session will be dedicated to current economic issues and cooperation opportunities, with a focus on the maritime economy, a sector of great importance for Liguria. In the afternoon, a round table will address issues of education and culture, aiming to promote new collaboration projects with countries such as Ecuador, Peru, and the Dominican Republic, which have significant resident communities in Liguria and established relationships with the territory.
The initiative is realized with the collaboration of the Port System Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea and the Consular Corps of Genoa, and involves the local authorities where the Latin American community is most present, particularly Genoa and La Spezia.
