Between 1958 and 1973, Italy displayed unprecedented dynamism towards Latin America. Governments and diplomacy prioritized the region in foreign policy. Major parties, particularly the DC and PCI, established lasting ties with ideologically like-minded forces across the ocean. Institutions and industrial groups increased their relevance in the subcontinent by supporting its development, albeit within the limits of Italy's capacity to ensure large flows of goods and capital compared to other Western partners. From 1966, the Italo-Latin American Institute (IILA) created a privileged forum for political and cultural dialogue. Overall, the initiatives promoted at the time allow us to view those years as a true 'season of activism'. Through the use and analysis of extensive archival documentation, this work assesses that historical phase and questions its significance. Was it merely a turning point in the fluctuating history of Italian-Latin American relations? Or was it rather the expression of a more organic and incisive foreign policy direction at a time when the global structure was also undergoing significant transformations? The characteristics and conditions of the 'season of activism' are explored, particularly examining relations with Venezuela, considered the most paradigmatic reality, alongside Chile, to understand the challenges, ambitions, and expectations that accompanied Italy's projection into Latin America during those years.
Graziano Palamara teaches History of International Relations at the University of Salerno. His research themes include the international projection of Latin American countries and Italian foreign policy in Latin America. Among his publications, noteworthy titles include New Strategies for International Insertion for Latin America (ed., Bogotá 2019); Between Condors and Turpials: Italian Diplomacy in Latin America, 1945-1958 (Bogotá 2018); Italy and Latin America at the Beginning of the Cold War: Colombia and Venezuela in Italian Foreign Policy 1948-1958 (Naples 2017).
